The Battle of Midway

June 4, 2012

9 or 10 am

Just six months after the attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the United States Navy inflicted irreparable damage to the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Battle of Midway which took place June 4-7, 1942.

To commemorate this great American naval victory, on Monday, June 4, 2012, at either 9:00 or 10:00 am, the Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg will conduct a wreath laying ceremony in concert with simultaneous wreath laying ceremonies held at bases throughout the world.

The United States Pacific Fleet, under the command of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, brought three carriers to the fray: USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Hornet (CV-8). Attached to each carrier group were fighter, bomber, scout and torpedo squadron aircraft, destroyers, cruisers, submarines and support and patrol vessels. The ceremony will be held in front of two "saluting" guns, one of which was on USS Hornet.

While this event will not be open to the public, we want to respectfully invite Battle of Midway survivors and family members to attend this ceremony and be formerly recognized.

Please contact Michael Randazzo at 717-605-2448 or michael.randazzo@navy.mil if interested in attending.

SSG Edward F Greiner Jr Memorial 5K Walk/Run

July 29, 2012

 9 am
Check in begins 8 am

North Park Boathouse
Pearce Mill Road
Allison Park, PA 15101

Eight year old Tyler Kautzman met SSG Eddie Greiner when the child asked for donations for overseas troops instead of birthday presents. The donations were sent to Eddie's 82nd Airborne Division and when Eddie came back home, he visited Tyler and they became fast friends. The five-year friendship story has a very sad ending because Eddie was killed in a motorcycle accident when a pickup turned left in front of him. This 5K memorial walk/run is to celebrate their friendship and Eddie's life.
