Allegheny County Announcements and Year-End Events

PITTSBURGH – As 2013 comes to an end, please find following several announcements, as well as information relative to year-end events for residents and visitors: 

New Year’s Holiday Office Closings 

As a reminder to the public, all County offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. 

On Tuesday, December 31, 2013, the Treasurer’s Office will close at 1:00 p.m. and the Sheriff’s Office will close at 2:00 p.m.  The Courts, as well as all offices under the Executive’s jurisdiction will be open regular business hours. Individuals wishing to visit or do business at various offices should contact that office beforehand to verify office hours for the holiday.  

Shuman Center – Interim Director Change Announced 

County Manager William D. McKain, CPA, announced today that the interim Director of the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, Mr. William S. Stickman, III, will leave that position on Friday, December 27, 2013, to spend more time with family. 

“Director Stickman made a commitment to the county to help us through a variety of transitions at the Shuman facility, including overseeing the restoration of the facility’s license from the PA Department of Public Welfare,” said County Manager McKain. “We are grateful for his service to this county and wish him the best as he enjoys some well-deserved time with his grandchildren.”  

Effective Monday, December 30, 2013, the new interim Director of the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center will be Mr. Earl F. Hill.  Mr. Hill has over 45 years of professional experience including acting as Western Region Director for the PA Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services, as Director of the Adult Outpatient Office, Hill Satellite of the Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic, and as Director of St. Francis Hospital's Adolescent Chemical Dependency Unit.  Mr. Hill holds a Master's degree in Psychology from Sonoma State University, California and earned his Bachelor's degree from Heidelberg College, Ohio. 

The position of Director is still open at this time as the County Manager seeks a qualified, dedicated individual to fill the vacancy.  

Boyce Park Ski Slopes & Snow Tubing 

 

The Boyce Park Ski Slopes and Snow Tubing Area will be open for extended hours during the Christmas Break and New Year’s holiday. Those planning to take to the slopes are encouraged to check snow conditions and operational status beforehand. A 24-hour recording is available by calling 724-733-4665. Christmas Tree Recycling Program 

The Allegheny County Department of Parks is again offering its Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program this holiday season.  Residents of the county can drop off their Christmas trees now through Saturday, January 18, 2014 at all nine regional parks during regular hours of operation (dawn to dusk). 

All lights, decorations, tinsel and stands must be removed from trees prior to drop-off.  The trees will be mulched and used in Allegheny County’s nine regional parks. 

Trees may be dropped off from dawn to dusk at the following locations in each of the nine county parks: 

  • Boyce Park – Parking lot by the wave pool 
  • Deer Lakes – Parking lot by Veterans Shelter 
  • Harrison Hills – Parking lot at the intersection of Chipmunk & Cottontail Drive 
  • Hartwood Acres – Parking lot at the mansion 
  • North Park – Parking lot at the swimming pool 
  • Round Hill – Parking lot between Meadow & Alfalfa Shelters 
  • Settler’s Cabin – Parking lot by the wave pool 
  • South Park – Parking lot at the swimming pool 
  • White Oak – Parking lot by Poplar Shelter 

Holiday Events at the Parks 

Residents and visitors can take part in ongoing research to document winter birds in North Park. No experience is necessary, but pre-registration is required by calling 724-935-2170. The Christmas Bird Count will occur on Saturday, December 28 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in South Park. Registered participants should meet at the Home Economic Building.
