Allegheny County Parks Activities & Events for December 3 – December 9

PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities and events schedule for December 3 – December 9, 2013. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For additional information, call 412-350-2455 or visit www.alleghenycounty.us/parks.

One Stroke Painting 

Free and open to the public, no experience or supplies needed. A decorative painting class that that teaches how to shade and highlight at the same time. Holiday Candlelight Tours

Relaxology 

Free, open to the public. Three week class engages students in practical, down to earth ways to relax and includes discussions on food, scents, breathing techniques and acupuncture points. Adult Nature Walk 

Free. Originally started as a program for stroke & heart patients, this nature group has expanded to any interested adult. The informal group meets rain or shine every Thursday of the year. Local naturalists guide these enlightening, leisurely paced walks. New nature adventures & discoveries every week. Dress well for outdoor walking.

Light Up Night 

Welcome the season and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the park as we plug in the Christmas lights for the first time. Purchase your holiday poinsettias, browse our holiday craft vendors or visit the miniature Christmas village. Fun for the whole family. L.L. Bean Turkey Day Preparation Series: Week 6 

Free. This 7.5-mile hike carrying a minimum of 10 lbs. is open to ages 10 & older. Ages 10-14 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Ages 15-17 may participate alone after a parent has signed the appropriate release form. Join L.L. Bean's Outdoor Discovery School Instructor John Mrdjenovich for a seven week program designed to get you outside and increase you fitness activity. Each week will have a different challenge with increased difficulty. Program overview: designed at the beginner to intermediate levels; all fitness levels are welcome; great for those who want to increase endurance or maintain weight; “warm up” for hunters who are getting ready to trek gear into the woods. The overall goal is a 12-mile hike in 4 hours carrying at least 10 pounds. Participants are welcome to attend any or all outings. You do not have to participate in one to attend another. Participants are encouraged to come to all seven outings since each builds on the previous. Get more information online.

The Girls on the Run 5K is more than just a running event, this race with a mission is designed to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. 5K - $17 until Dec. 7 at 1:50 PM/Family of Four - $70/Kids Ribbon Race - $5; On Race Day – 5K - $25/Kids Ribbon Race - $7

Oliver Miller Homestead 18th Century Frontier Christmas 

$2 admission. The house will be decorated as the pioneers might have with greens, berries, pine cones and ribbons. Traditional puddings will be cooked at the open hearth. To mark the end of the year, we will celebrate as the Scots do, with a Hogmanay. The Scots believe that the old year must be finalized by settling debts, cleaning house and returning borrowed items and the old year’s woes must be frightened off by bells ringing and rifles firing. The new year will be welcomed with gifts to those whom you visit.  The tradition of first footing will be observed, when the first guest in the new year should be a dark-haired, tall male in order to ensure good luck. Last admission is at 4:00 p.m.
