Allegheny County Parks Activities & Events for November 12-18

PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities and events schedule for November 12-18. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For additional information, call 412-350-2455 or visit www.alleghenycounty.us/parks.

Latodami Environmental Education Center Preschool Children's Program 

Free. The program is specifically designed to introduce young children to the outdoors. This class is very hands-on, and we spend most of our time outside. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will be actively assisting in the teaching & learning process. Dress well for outdoor explorations – we do get wet & dirty!

Free. Originally started as a program for stroke & heart patients, this nature group has expanded to any interested adult. The informal group meets rain or shine every Thursday of the year. Local naturalists guide these enlightening, leisurely paced walks. New nature adventures & discoveries every week. Dress well for outdoor walking.

Run for the Wounded Warrior 5K & 5-Miler 

5K pre-registration fee is $25 or $30 for day-of registration. 5-Miler pre-registration fee is $30 or $35 for day-of registration. This is an annual event organized by members of the community and supported by local corporations & organizations. It raises funds & awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project and National Organization on Disability. Get more information & register online.

L.L. Bean Turkey Day Preparation Series: Week 3 

Free. This outing is open to people ages 10 & older. Children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Youth ages 15-17 may participate alone after their parent has signed the appropriate release form. Come join L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School Instructor John Mrdjenovich for a 7-week program designed to get you outside and increase you fitness activity. Each week will have a different challenge with increased difficulty. Program overview: designed at the beginner to intermediate levels; all fitness levels are welcome; great for those who want to increase endurance or maintain weight; “warm up” for hunters who are getting ready to trek gear into the woods. This week’s goal is a 12-mile hike in four hours while carrying at least 10 pounds.  

Participants are welcome to attend any or all outings. You do not have to participate in one to attend another. Participants are encouraged to come to all seven outings as each outing builds on the previous. Get more information online.

Entry fee is $20. $10 for ages 13 & younger. All of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Northwood Charitable Foundation, which was established in 2006 to raise financial support for local housing-related charities and members of the Northwood family in need. Venture Outdoors Day Trek: Lite 

$10 for non-members; $6 for Venture Outdoors members. Easy difficulty. Beginners looking for an easy, rejuvenating experience outdoors will spend an afternoon exploring a new trail, getting some exercise & discovering something new about the natural world. With experienced guides to lead the way, participants will learn about regional trails that are fun, inspirational & easily accessible. We’ll learn about the trees, plants, flowers, birds & other creatures that live in nearby natural spaces. The pace will be slow, and we'll cover 3-4 miles. This hike is dog friendly! PTAG Volunteer Appreciation Day 

Free. Come out & share in our appreciation to those who have volunteered engineering, building & maintaining the shared-use trail systems in 2013. Meet at 10:00 a.m. for MTB rides and a hike on the beautiful trails of North Park. At 1:30 p.m., indulge in food & beverages while getting ready for the Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony, including swag & prize giveaways. Share stories of your favorite trails. Hikes are coordinated by Friends of North Park & MTB rides are coordinated by PTAG/PORC. Helmets must be worn during rides on PTAG coordinated rides. Hiking boots, trekking poles or walking sticks are recommended for the hike. Bring your own mug or water bottle. Get more information online.

Native American Art & Traditions 

$3 donation to support the Harrison Hills Environmental Learning Center. Andy Ruffner has been rediscovering many lost Native-American arts and will share with you how to turn deer hide into soft, wearable buckskin, as well as porcupine quilling, flint knapping, making fire starters from char cloth, and tools from bone & stone. Venture Outdoors Full Moon Hike 

$10 for non-members; $6 for Venture Outdoors members. Moderate difficulty. Join us for an evening of hiking & forest exploration under the light of a full moon. We will enjoy the tranquility of the evening while observing the stars in the sky and the critters that are more active at night. The hike will cover 3-4 miles at an easy pace going up and down some hills. Marvel at how well your eyes can see by the light of the moon! Register online with Venture Outdoors.
