PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA)notified the Port Authority of Allegheny County this afternoon that it will temporarily lift the HOV+2 restriction on the Wabash Tunnel until the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) ongoing West Carson Street project is completed in December 2015.
“This is great news for the commuters who are impacted by the West Carson Street construction and we are grateful to the FTA for its approval of this request and to PennDOT for its assistance,” said County Executive Fitzgerald. “This would not have been possible without the advocacy, requests and support of U.S. Senator Bob Casey, U.S. Congressman Mike Doyle, State Senator Wayne D. Fontana, State Representative Erin Molchany, County Council Member Jim Ellenbogen and Pittsburgh Mayor-Elect Bill Peduto.”
The Port Authority will not enforce the HOV+2 restriction starting tomorrow, Thursday, November 7, and will issue a formal announcement by the end of the week. The Port Authority will post appropriate traffic signage at the Wabash Tunnel to guide motorists during this period. It will also provide additional information on its website, www.portauthority.org, later this week.
