24/7 Number Offers Breastfeeding Moms Information & Advice
PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Health Department today announced that a new phone number is now in effect for its Breastfeeding Helpline, 412-687-ACHD (2243), which is the main number for the Health Department and answers 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Breastfeeding mothers with questions or problems can access the Helpline to obtain accurate information, sound advice and supportive guidance from specially trained experts who are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.
“Our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants offer not only their technical expertise but also the kind of emotional sensitivity that can help a breastfeeding mom pull through when she is thinking of giving up because she is feeling frustrated or experiencing physical discomfort,” said Health Director Dr. Karen Hacker. “With our encouragement, new mothers hopefully will breastfeed longer and as a result babies and moms will derive greater health benefits. Surveys show that in Pennsylvania while 70% of new moms breastfeed right after their babies are born, only 43% are still breastfeeding six months later.”
The Breastfeeding Helpline refers all calls to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant who will respond the same day or the next business day if the call comes in after regular business hours.
