PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities and events schedule for October 29 through November 4. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. For additional information, call 412-350-2455 or visit www.alleghenycounty.us/parks.

Horses with Hope Program 

One-time application fee of $15. Each 45-minute session is $40. Pre-registration is required by calling Joanne Murdy at 412-607-8075 or Anne Davis at 615-513-4106. Several medical forms & releases are also required.  

Horses with Hope is a faith-based, non-profit organization that provides therapeutic riding and other equine-related activities to enhance the physical, mental, social & emotional needs of children & adults. Each session is taught by a PATH International certified instructor & trained volunteers who lead the horse and use side-walkers on each side of the rider. Each rider is instructed on horsemanship, grooming, tacking & mounted riding. The skills are determined by the rider’s capabilities & the instructor, while focusing on as much independence as possible. We are committed to providing safe, quality programs for children & adults. Saitama City Delegation Visit & Sakura Planting 

Free & open to the public. Allegheny County will host a 30-member delegation from Saitama City, Japan, including its mayor, city council members & residents. The delegation will visit the Pittsburgh Sakura Project planting site, as well as donate and plant a sakura, or Japanese cherry tree.

Dirt Monster 5-Mile Trail Race & 1-Mile Trail Walk 

$15 before Oct. 30; $20 day of event. The challenging 5-mile race course winds its way along dirt roads & unpaved trails. The 1-mile trail walk follows the rolling first section of the race course. Pittsburgh Sakura Project Fall Planting Day 

Free & open to the public. The Pittsburgh Sakura Project will plant approximately 30 young sakura, or Japanese cherry trees. Volunteers are needed. Native American Story Pole & Story Telling 

Free. Pre-registration required by calling 724-935-2170. Learn the history of Native Americans in North Park and how the story pole came to the park. Lenora “Lee” Dingus of Echoes of the Four Directions will be presenting the stories of the West Coast’s Snohomish Nation, the four-footed, winged & other animals carved on the pole, as well as Seneca stories. Venture Outdoors Autumn Beer Tasting Hike 

$35 for non-members; $27 for Venture Outdoors members. We’ll hike 2-3 miles of scenic trails & hilly terrain while learning about the natural history of Boyce Park. The hike will be followed by a seasonal sampling of hand-picked beers from nearby Rivertowne Pour House. Cheese, meats, crackers & other appetizers will accompany the hearty selection of hops & barley. Minimum age 21. Register online with Venture Outdoors.

Venture Outdoors Harvest Wine Tasting Hike 

$47 for non-members; $35 for Venture Outdoors members. Red, orange, yellow & brown are the colors of autumn. Imagine leaves peaking & falling, squashes in the fields plump & ready for the picking, and a glass of red wine in your hand after a nice hike in the woods. We'll enjoy an easy 3-4 mile hike through North Park while learning about the history of the area. After the hike, we'll go to the nearby Tuscan Inn to taste a variety of high-quality wines paired with gourmet appetizers. Minimum age 21.Register online with Venture Outdoors.
