PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Hacker will join Representative Jake Wheatley for the UPHill 5K Walk/Run! On Saturday, September 14 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Freedom Corner (Centre Avenue & Crawford Street).
“There is a renewed interest in our community in encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle and taking steps to improve our health,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “I’m thrilled to join with Representative Wheatley and Dr. Hacker in the 5K Walk/Run, and thank the Thelma Lovette YMCA for making public health a priority in the community.”
The County Executive will serve as the honorary starter and will fire the starting gun for the 5K Walk/Run. Then he, and Dr. Hacker, will participate in the 5K.
“Whether its walking through the parks, taking the stairs, parking further away in a lot, or taking the step of participating in a run or walk, I want to encourage our residents to increase their physical activity,” said Dr. Karen Hacker. “The Health & Wellness Weekend is a great way to get our community to begin thinking about making better decisions for their health and I’m thrilled to participate.”
The Health & Wellness Weekend, sponsored by Rep. Wheatley in conjunction with the Thelma Lovette YMCA, is focused on improving the health of the community. An opening reception will be held this evening at the Thelma Lovette YMCA where Dr. Jeannette South-Paul from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will speak to visitors about their health.
“When you hear the word ‘health,’ you always go instantly to physical health, but we’re also talking about your financial health, your mental health, your emotional health and your communal health,” said Rep. Wheatley. “That was the impetus for the Health & Wellness Weekend which will get people out moving, talking and sharing.”
Saturday will start with the UPHill 5K Run/Walk that begins at Freedom Corner, proceeds up Centre Avenue, turns around at Ewart Drive and finishes back at Freedom Corner. Free parking will be provided from the Melody Lot (upper lot) of the Consol Energy Center. Day of registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the run/walk kicking off at 9:00 a.m. Participants will be automatically entered into a grand prize drawing of a Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon basket, as well as being entered into a drawing for free entry into any Pittsburgh sponsored marathon.
On Sunday, the Thelma Lovette YMCA will host a Health Expo offering various screenings, fitness classes, healthy cooking demonstrations, stress management and fun physical competitions for children. It will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is open to the public, free of charge.
