PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities, events and concerts schedule for September 10-16. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Horses with Hope is a faith-based, non-profit organization that provides therapeutic riding and other equine-related activities to enhance the physical, mental, social & emotional needs of children & adults. Each session is taught by a PATH International certified instructor & trained volunteers who lead the horse and use side-walkers on each side of the rider. Each rider is instructed on horsemanship, grooming, tacking & mounted riding. The skills are determined by the rider’s capabilities & the instructor, while focusing on as much independence as possible. We are committed to providing safe, quality programs for children & adults. $2 admission. The Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line will be camped on the grounds of the Oliver Miller Homestead. This reenactment group will depict the day to day life of the American soldier in the 18th century. Activities will include close order drills, musket firing, and outdoor cooking.  Young visitors to the Homestead will be recruited, given recruitment papers and instructed in military drills.

Wagman Observatory Star Party 

Free. Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh (AAAP) members give a guided tour of the sky – an introduction to the constellations and brighter stars. Wagman Observatory’s two large, permanent telescopes will be open and staffed. There are also displays inside the observatory. Visitors are also welcome to use portable telescopes set up by AAAP members. Attendees may bring their own telescopes, and AAAP members will assist with set up and operation if needed. Many visitors bring binoculars or just use their eyes. People with disabilities are encouraged to attend. Portable telescopes are easily positioned for viewing by anyone. A parking pad gives wheelchair vans easy access to the observatory. There is no running water, so comfort facilities consist of a portable toilet. No food or drinks are served, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own snacks & non-alcoholic beverages. Lawn chairs are also recommended.

This 2 mile walk is a family-friendly event that takes place in communities nationwide to fund food allergy research, education, advocacy and awareness. Registration is from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., followed by a walk ceremony. The walk will begin immediately after the ceremony.

$69 per person. Easy activity level. Minimum age is 12. Ages 12-14 require participating adult. Have you always wanted to try fly fishing but didn't know where to begin? This three-hour course will teach you the basics of fly casting in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Our skilled instructors will introduce you to the four-part cast, false cast and roll cast. With plenty of time for practice and one-on-one instruction, you'll refine the skills essential to spending productive time on the water. We'll also explain how to strip and shoot line and tie basic fishing knots. Does not include fishing time on the water. Get more information.
