Allegheny County Parks Activities, Events & Concerts for Aug. 27-Sept. 2

PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities, events and concerts schedule for August 27-Spetember 2. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. All concert acts and times are subject to change. Horses with Hope Program 

One-time application fee of $15. Each 45-minute session is $40. Pre-registration is required by calling Joanne Murdy at 412-607-8075 or Anne Davis at 615-513-4106. Several medical forms & releases are also required.  

Horses with Hope is a faith-based, non-profit organization that provides therapeutic riding and other equine-related activities to enhance the physical, mental, social & emotional needs of children & adults. Each session is taught by a PATH International certified instructor & trained volunteers who lead the horse and use side-walkers on each side of the rider. Each rider is instructed on horsemanship, grooming, tacking & mounted riding. The skills are determined by the rider’s capabilities & the instructor, while focusing on as much independence as possible. We are committed to providing safe, quality programs for children & adults. Under the Ballou Skies Charity Bike Ride 

$40 for 5- to 25-mile ride, $50 for 50-mile ride & $70 for 100-mile ride. Come join the fun and ride to help save the lives of those who endure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We will have two guest appearances that day: Pascal Dupuis of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who will be riding with us for the 25-mile distance; and Ryan Ballou, who is the 

reason we fight. There will be a silent auction for a Ballou Skies cycling jersey signed by Ryan and Pascal Dupuis and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds go directly to Ballou Skies and the team of doctors who research to find a cure. The first 100 to register are guaranteed a tech t-shirt and Ballou Skies water bottle. Check-in starts at 7:00 a.m. & ride starts at 8:00 a.m. Register online.

Platform Tennis Season Begins

The North Park Platform Tennis Association (NPPTA) has been operating for more than 30 years, and its members compete with teams from throughout the region. The NPPTA maintains, heats, and provides capital improvements for the North Park Platform Tennis Courts. The association encourages the public to utilize the courts when they are not in use by its members, during team matches or practices, or by other members of the public. Females interested in joining NPPTA should contact Jyll Lilly at brijyll@consolidated.net, and males should contact Ed Jaicks at ejaicks@yahoo.com.

AQHA Trail Challenge 

$60 per horse/rider (does not include meal). All competitors must be current American Quarter Horse Association members. AQHA Trail competition rules apply. The Horsemen’s Corral Team Spirit Challenge: $200/4 riders/group. Participants with 8+ volunteer hours with Pennsylvania DCNR ride for free. Enjoy clear cut, well-marked and mapped bridle paths on easy to intermediate terrain through woods and fields. The Trail Challenge course winds around the parameter of the North Park Golf Course on the Orange Trail and is shared with hikers, bikers and the occasional picnic pavilion. Trail footing is mixed and consists primarily of grass and dirt with gravel. Horses and riders will encounter asphalt and cross main roads at breaks while navigating the trail.
