PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities, events and concerts schedule for July 9-15. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Each rider is instructed on horsemanship, grooming, tacking & mounted riding. The skills are determined by the rider’s capabilities & the instructor, while focusing on as much independence as possible. We are committed to providing safe, quality programs for children & adults. The adventures of aging are filtered through three married couples that have known each other for more than 30 years. Join Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group (PTAG) at the annual celebration of singletrack trails in the Allegheny County Parks. Formerly known as the Mountain Bike Festival, this year the event has been expanded to include hiking and trail running. Mountain bike rides, trail runs and hikes will be led by PTAG and Pittsburgh Off-Road Cyclists (PORC) members. Riders are required to wear a helmet. All ages welcome. Depending on skill level, rides will be 1-3 hours. If you run out of energy, someone will direct you back to your car. Get more information.

Star Party 

Free. Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh (AAAP) members give a guided tour of the sky – an introduction to the constellations and brighter stars. Wagman Observatory’s two large, permanent telescopes will be open and staffed. There are also displays inside the observatory. Visitors are also welcome to use portable telescopes set up by AAAP members. Attendees may bring their own telescopes, and AAAP members will assist with set up and operation if needed. Many visitors bring binoculars or just use their eyes. People with disabilities are encouraged to attend. Portable telescopes are easily positioned for viewing by anyone. A parking pad gives wheelchair vans easy access to the observatory. There is no running water, so comfort facilities consist of a portable toilet. No food or drinks are served, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own snacks & non-alcoholic beverages. Lawn chairs are also recommended.

3rd Annual Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma 5K Run/Walk 

$25 registration fee. Event is organized in cooperation with the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA). Our goal is to raise both awareness and resources for sarcoma research through the SFA and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Sarcoma Research Fund. The success of this effort depends on contributions from both organizations and concerned individuals. Special events include sarcoma candle memorial ceremony, 5K runner awards and trophies, basket raffle, door prizes, “Act 80” live band, 50/50 drawing, post race food, race team displays and festivities.
