Allegheny County Parks Activities, Events & Concerts for June 18-24

PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Parks Department today announced its activities, events and concerts schedule for June 18-24. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Venture Outdoors A3 Paddle 

$29 for non-members, $22 for members. Easy difficulty. Join us on tranquil North Park Lake for this A3 (Active, Aging Adults) paddle. We’ll start with instructionsand plenty of practice, and then head onto North Park Lake to see just how easy it is to paddle. Kayaks, guides and instruction are provided. This social outing is geared toward active, aging adults 55-80, but is open to everyone. Register online with Venture Outdoors.

Summer Adult Basketball Leagues Begin 

No entry fee, only cost is that of the referees. Pre-registration required. Adult Basketball Leagues consists of 24 teams between Boyce, North and South parks with 10 players per team). Each team will play a 14-game schedule. Participants will receive a t-shirt. League winners and runner-ups will receive trophies. League winners play for Parks Department Championship. "Books to Life" Cinema Series - The Lorax (PG) 

Free. Weather permitting. Attendees may bring food and non-alcoholic beverages. Adapted from the Dr. Seuss book, “The Lorax” tells the story of Ted Wiggins, a boy who lives in Thneedville. Ted visits the Once-ler, a hermit living outside of the city, and discovers the dark past that surrounds Thneedville’s lack of trees. After receiving a tree seed from the Once-ler, the responsibility of reviving the trees lies in Ted’s hands. Once again this summer, we are partnering with the Allegheny County Library Association to bring books to life. Check out “The Lorax” from your local ACLA library or Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branch, and then come watch the movie with us!

Hell Hath No Hurry Trail Race 

5-6 Mile Race is $25 by 6/21 or $30 day-of. 4-Hour Challenge is $30 by 6/21 or $35 day-of. 8-Hour Challenge is $35 by 6/21 or $40 day-of. 12-Hour Challenge is $40 by 6/21 or $45 day-of. This event is aimed toward those who like to go into the woods and see what they are made of. The main event this year is a 4-, 8-, and 12-hour endurance race. All runners will be traversing the same 5-6 mile loop as many times as they can in their respective time period. The winners of each category are those who have completed the most miles in the allotted time period. Additionally, There is going to be a 5-6 mile trail race. This event is going to transverse the same loop that the 4/8/12 hour runners will be running, but they will only be doing the loop once. This event will serve as an introduction to the event and trails it utilizes. It will also provide a faster option to come out and support the event without having to commit an entire day. Congenital Heart Walk 

Fundraising encouraged - no minimum or maximum to participate. This year's walk will once again include a great route, food and fun. This meaningful joint venture between the Adult Congenital Heart Association and Children's Heart Foundation is designed to bring together the congenital heart disease community like never before. We hope that you will consider forming a team and recruiting your friends, family members, and co-workers to become a part of our walk. Register or sponsor a walker.

Ballou Skies 2-Mile Walk/Run 

$20 pre-registration, $25 day-of registration. The mission of Ballou Skies is to provide funds to map the hearts of boys and girls with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which weakens all muscles. Without a cure, the most important muscle, the heart, will fail. If we can look at numerous hearts and map the progression of scarring and the weakening of this vital muscle, we can hopefully extend lives until there is a cure. Register for the walk.

Pittsburgh Walk for Williams 

$20 individual/$50 for family of 4. Williams Syndrome (WS) is a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone. It is characterized by medical and developmental problems such as, cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities. The Williams Syndrome Association is the most comprehensive resource for people and families living with WS, as well as doctors, researchers and educators - funding groundbreaking research, hosting camps and conventions, providing scholarships, coordinating regional programming and more. By joining forces with the WSA and local volunteers, you are changing the future for all individuals with Williams Syndrome.
