Free refreshments & music to follow; residents asked to bring toys & books for DHS Holiday Project
PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald will light the 20-foot tree in the courthouse courtyard at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 16, as part of the 52nd Annual Light Up Night in Downtown Pittsburgh. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be served, and holiday music will fill the courtyard from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
Those attending the tree lighting are asked to bring items for the 2012 DHS Holiday Project gift collection drive for children and youth receiving services through the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Children, Youth & Families, the agency charged with protecting children from abuse and neglect. New unwrapped multi-cultural toys, including baby dolls, as well as a diverse selection of books for all reading levels are always needed.
Each year, the generosity of our community makes the holidays happier for the thousands of children and youth who receive services through CYF,” said Fitzgerald. “I encourage anyone attending the festivities on Friday evening to bring a toy or book to help us meet our goal of providing each child and young person in need with at least one meaningful gift. Recipients include newborns, toddlers, school-age children, teenagers and young adults.”
This year, Allegheny County is providing the option of making a purchase through the Amazon.com DHS Holiday Project Wish List. Donors may choose from the most-needed holiday gifts and books, and purchases will be shipped directly to the Holiday Project. In addition, DHS will continue to have donation drop-off sites at various locations throughout Allegheny County through December 3.
