Processors Are Inspected and Permitted by County or State
PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Health Department has compiled a list of inspected and permitted facilities that offer deer processing services for hunters.
The directory of deer processors is posted on the Health Department’s web site, www.achd.net, and currently includes the following six facilities:
Doug Peffer’s Deer Cutting and Smokehouse, Ellwood City; Elluinger’s Meats, Zelienople; Jim Landis, Elizabeth Township; Hoffer’s Ligonier Valley Packing, Ligonier; Mamula Meat Packing, Aliquippa; and Vic Novak’s Choice Meats, Perry Hilltop.
The listing includes the name, address and telephone number of each facility.
“Only hunter-killed deer should be processed and consumed and only permitted processors should be used to ensure safe venison,” said Acting Health Director Dr. Ron Voorhees. “We’d be happy to list other permitted deer processors and urge them to contact us if they’d like to be listed on our web site.”
To be listed, a facility already must be inspected and permitted by the Allegheny County Health Department or Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
Any facility that wants to be added to the directory should email the Allegheny County Health Department at email@example.com or call 412-687-ACHD (2243). Hunters are encouraged to check the web site periodically for additions.
The web site also provides health and safety tips for hunters and links to a brochure by the Penn State Cooperative Extension entitled “Proper Care and Handling of Venison from Field to Table.”
The Health Department developed the deer processor directory several years ago after a disreputable processor closed suddenly and left hundreds of carcasses to rot during the previous deer hunting season.
