Allegheny County Announces Lineup for 2012 Summer Concert Series & Events

PITTSBURGH – County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced the lineup for the 2012 Summer Concert Series and summer events, which are organized by the Special Events Office.  In addition to the traditional concert series at the amphitheaters at South Park and Hartwood Acres Park, the County will also be offering a “Books to Life” Cinema Series, “Big Band Bashes,” a concert at Harrison Hills Park, a Father’s Day Car Cruise and will be hosting the 3rd Annual Dog Day Festival at Hartwood Acres Park.

The concert series kicks off the first weekend in June with pop/rock singer-songwriter (and Bethel Park product) Steve Moakler performing at the South Park Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 1st. The first performance at the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater will feature Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum artist Joan Osborne at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 3rd.

Broadway’s future stars will take the stage at Hartwood Acres at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 10th, when the Pittsburgh CLO presents “Another Gleeful Evening.” The Pittsburgh CLO Mini Stars and Gene Kelly Award winners will perform classic and current hits of musical theater.  Other Hartwood highlights include Toad the Wet Sprocket and soul powerhouse Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.

South Park’s line-up boasts multiple Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams, Grammy-nominated funk jazz tour de force Trombone Shorty, as well as a tribute concert to Pittsburgh Blues guitarist Glen Pavone who passed away in August of 2010.

Allegheny County is partnering with the Allegheny County Library Association to present a “Books to Life” Cinema Series at parks throughout the county.  All films begin at sundown (roughly 9 p.m.).

This summer will also include four “Big Band Bashes” at the North and South Park Skating Rinks, each beginning at 7:30 p.m.  On June 17th, Allegheny County will present a Father’s Day Car Cruise at Hartwood Acres Park from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., to be followed by the legendary Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners on the amphitheater stage.  Harrison Hills Park will be home to a Bluegrass concert on Saturday, June 30th at 7 p.m. featuring Mac Martin and the Dixie Travelers.

The 18th Annual Pittsburgh Blues Festival will be held July 20-22 at the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater. The festival requires paid admission. Various packages and special discounts are available.  Admission is free on Friday, July 20th, with donation of a bag of non-perishable grocery items. On August 19th, all dogs, dog owners and dog lovers are invited to the Third Annual Dog Day Festival at the Hartwood Acres Amphitheater from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will benefit the Animal Rescue League and include demonstrations, activities, contests and adoptions.  The festival will be followed by the Hometown Music Fest featuring Joy Ike, the New Shouts and Cello Fury among others.
