The can’t-miss, one-stop Garden Shop … for one day only!
PITTSBURGH – The Penn State Extension invites residents to get a jump on this year’s garden shopping at the Garden Marketplace on Saturday, April 14th. Held annually for one day only, this year’s event takes place inside the ice rink at Shady Side Academy Senior School in Fox Chapel. The event is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free to the public.
The Garden Marketplace features perennials, both the newest cultivars and old cottage favorites, as well as hard-to-find varieties like the much-sought-after double-blooming bloodroot or the collector’s choice, variegated bugbane. With over 20 vendors, plant selections will include shrubs, trees, dwarf conifers, Japanese maples, heirloom tomatoes, specialty vegetables, lettuce bowls, water garden plants, along with many varieties of native plants, shade-loving hosta, hellebores, culinary and medicinal herbs, bonsai, cacti, succulents and terrarium plants.
At this one-stop shopping adventure you’ll find wearable garden art (fun to wear and inspired by nature), whimsical handcrafted copper sculptures, colorful photography of floral compositions, prints of botanical illustrations, greeting cards, unusual pottery and plant stands, one-of-a-kind garden ornaments, garden trugs, scissors, and gloves.
And if you can spare ten minutes or so while browsing, consult the Ten-Minute Tips schedule (available on line at www.landscapesymposium.org). Informative garden talks will be given on topics ranging from trees to tools, heirloom tomatoes, pruning techniques, growing potatoes, increasing curb appeal, rain gardens, and more.
If you’re a gardener or you know a gardener, then this is the place to be. Parking is also free, plentiful and convenient to shopping, all on one level, indoors. Visit the Garden Marketplace April 14th for a must-see-to-believe garden shopping experience.
