Fitzgerald Crowns Mary Kate Gallagher as Miss Smiling Irish Eyes 2012

PITTSBURGH – County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today crowned Mary Kate Gallagher of Stowe Twp. as Miss Smiling Irish Eyes 2012. In a tradition dating back to the 1960s, Fitzgerald’s participation in the ceremony also included recognition of her court maidens, Shannon Evans and Laura Schubert.

“It is such an honor to have the pleasure of crowning Miss Smiling Irish Eyes,” said Fitzgerald. “As an Irishman from Pittsburgh, I truly understand and appreciate the deep traditions that we celebrate through Miss Smiling Irish Eyes and our annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. These young ladies are shining examples of our youth in Pittsburgh. They are engaged and accomplished students, community volunteers and have actively promoted their Irish heritage.”

The crowning of Miss Smiling Irish Eyes is a tradition that dates back to the late 1960s when the Allegheny County Commissioners crowned the queen in session. The County Executive now has the honor and privilege of crowning her.

Mary Kate Gallagher, the daughter of Michael and Marlea Gallagher, resides in Stowe Twp. and is a senior at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Coraopolis where she is an honor roll student. She has lettered in volleyball and cheerleading and is team captain of her school’s track and field team. The youngest of four children, she plans on attending Seton Hill College in the fall.

Court maiden Shannon Evans resides in the North Hills and is a senior at North Hills High School. The daughter of Paul and Julie Evans, she is an honor roll student and member of the school’s marching band. She plans on attending the University of Akron in the fall.

Court maiden Laura Schubert is from Crafton Heights and graduated in 2010 from Oakland Catholic High School. The daughter of Richard and Mary Rodgers Schubert, she is currently a sophomore at Case Western Reserve University where she maintains a 3.5 GPA at the Francis Payne Bolton School of Nursing.

Miss Smiling Irish Eyes must be a single woman between the ages of 17 and 22, of Irish birth or descent, of good moral character, and an active promoter of her Irish ancestry. As part of her duties, Miss Smiling Irish Eyes participates in ceremonial functions leading up to and including the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
