The halls of Kane McKeesport were humming on Valentine’s Day thanks to Ken Schmigel, his Recreational Therapy team and a merry group of volunteers who delivered over 220 singing telegrams. There were all sorts of reactions ranging from laughter to embarrassment to tears from residents and staff as they were serenaded by the group.
Each recipient of the singing telegram received a balloon and a verse of a song chosen by the sender. The crooners worked at a fast pace on a tight schedule and were able to make it around to all recipients.
A variety of songs were chosen by the senders. Some of the favorites were “Heart of My Heart,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” and “You Are My Sunshine.” One of the unique choices was “Your Cheatin Heart” which drew a few chuckles. Schmigel and his cohorts worked diligently to make sure they could fulfill all requests.
Hubert Humphrey once said, “The greatest healing therapy is love and friendship.” That being the case there was plenty of healing going on at Kane McKeesport on Valentine’s Day and always.
