PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato today applauded the success of the County’s free prescription discount card and encouraged residents to take advantage of the program. During the first eight months of the program, county residents filled 12,750 prescriptions with an average savings of 29 percent. The program has so far saved Allegheny County residents a total of $234,805.

Allegheny County launched the program in June 2010 to help consumers cope with the high price of prescriptions. The County is making the free prescription discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo), which offers average savings of 22 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

“Allegheny County is proud to announce the savings residents have already received by using the prescription discount card,” said Onorato. “The program is bringing real savings to consumers, and we encourage all residents to get one of the free cards and take advantage of the program.”

The free discount cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage. The cards are accepted at more than 300 pharmacies in Allegheny County. A national network of more than 60,000 retail pharmacies also honors the NACo prescription discount card.

Residents may print a discount card at www.caremark.com/naco. Cards are also available at Allegheny County government offices, Allegheny County Housing Authority communities, family support centers, Head Start child care centers, CareerLink offices, Goodwill stores, public libraries, senior centers, and some pharmacies.

County residents may visit www.alleghenycounty.us/alleghenyrx to download a card, locate a participating pharmacy, and find answers to frequently asked questions. Residents may also call toll free 1-877-321-2652 with questions about the program.

“The discount card is an easy way for Allegheny County residents to save hard-earned money on prescriptions,” added Onorato. “There are no enrollment forms, no membership fees, and no restrictions or limits on usage. Simply take the card to a participating pharmacy, and if your prescription is eligible, you’ll receive a discount on the spot.”

The program is administered by CVS Caremark.
