Twenty Finalists Recognized In Student Art Contest

Theme Promotes Influenza Vaccination; Artwork on Display at Art Institute

The Allegheny County Immunization Coalition, a group of 43 health organizations and educational institutions led by the Allegheny County Health Department, today announced the finalists in its second annual “Community Immunity” student art contest.

The theme of this year’s contest, open to students in grades 9-12, is Don’t Let the Flu Get You Down:  Get Vaccinated…Stay Healthy…Have Fun.  It is intended to encourage influenza vaccinations not just for children but for individuals all across the lifespan.

The artwork of the 20 finalists is on display at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, 420 Blvd. of the Allies, downtown, until December 10, when the winners will be announced at a reception there coinciding with National Influenza Vaccination Week, December 6-12.  The artwork also is displayed on the Health Department’s web site, www.achd.net.

The following students are being recognized as finalists:

  • Avonworth High School – 10th grade, Lydia George.
  • Highlands High School – 9th grade, Andrew Caldwell; 10th grade, Morgan DeBerry, Matthew Kopka, Stephanie Oertel and Kayla Weinfurther; 11th grade, Nathan Doverspike, Taylor Magoc and Danielle Pater.
  • Holy Family Institute – 10th grade, Amanda Fritz and Alexis Harris, 11th grade, Justin Kearns.
  • Serra Catholic High School – 11th grade, Ben Elko; 12th grade, Suphitsara Buttra and Gabrielle Cooksey.
  • Wilkinsburg High School – 9th grade, Antonio Brown, Crystal Lewis and Sadae Young; 11th grade, Jared  Roundtree; 12th grade, Earl Comunale.

The first place winner and school each will receive $250 from the Immunization Coalition.  Scholarships of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 will be awarded by the Art Institute to first, second and third place winners respectively who enroll there full-time.

In addition, the artwork of the first, second and third place winners will be exhibited December 22 – January 5 in the Highmark window at Fifth Avenue Place, downtown Pittsburgh.
