A group of 12 Kane McKeesport residents made the annual trek to nearby Elizabeth to visit Round Hill Park & Farm and enjoy an early Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 23.

Since 2002, Round Hill Park & Farm, Allegheny County’s working farm park, has extended the holiday invitation to Kane McKeesport. The visit has become one of the most anticipated events at the county center.

“The Round Hill Farm staff wants to do this for county nursing home residents,” said Emma Forsythe, Recreation Therapy Supervisor at Kane McKeesport. “The event is planned and overseen by Gerald LaFrankie, the park manager, and his staff. The park is located in nearby Elizabeth, and it is the proverbial ‘Over the River and Through the Woods’ trip for our residents.”

Students of St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Port Vue help serve the Thanksgiving dinner. Lloyd Bell, one of the Kane McKeesport residents, delivered the blessing. After dinner, the students provided music and entertainment for the residents, and each resident receives a gift from the students.

“It is one of the most anticipated trips of the year for our residents,” Forsythe said.
