PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Allegheny County Airport Authority officials today announced that American Eagle, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, will add three daily nonstop flights from Pittsburgh International Airport to Chicago O’Hare Airport beginning on April 6, 2010. American will also enhance its nonstop Pittsburgh-to-Dallas/Ft. Worth service by flying MD-80s on its three daily roundtrip flights beginning in April 2010. All flights can be booked beginning today at www.AA.com.

“Ensuring the long-term success of Pittsburgh International Airport has been a priority of my administration, and we are continuing to grow quality air service for Southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Onorato. “We’re pleased that American Airlines is expanding service to Chicago and increasing capacity to Dallas. With more flights, travelers will enjoy better arrival and departure times, lower fares, and better connections.”

The announcement comes as American Airlines has obtained a total of $2.9 billion in additional liquidity and new aircraft financing. The airline announced plans to strengthen its network by reallocating capacity to hubs in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Chicago, Miami and New York. It is also enhancing its fleet to better serve customers.

“This is excellent news for business and leisure travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority Chairman Glenn R. Mahone, “American’s announcement coincides with the airline’s realignment of its routes and aircraft, and it is good to see they recognize Southwest Pennsylvania as an important market in that plan.”

Currently, American Eagle offers three daily nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to Chicago. When the new service is added in the middle of 2010, the airline will have a total of six daily roundtrip nonstop flights on EMB regional jets.
