The Allegheny County Health Department today reported that Appliance Warehouse’s countywide free pickup and recycling program for refrigerant-containing household appliances has been successfully completed.

The program, sponsored by a grant from the Allegheny County Clean Air Fund, collected and recycled more than 3,500 refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers and other appliances no longer in use.

“Removing refrigerant from and recycling these appliances is a win-win for the environment and public health,” said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.

“It not only cuts down on illegal dumping and saves valuable landfill space, but also prevents the release of refrigerant gases that deplete the ozone layer, which blocks the sun’s ultraviolet rays that increase the risk of skin cancer.”

Parkway Heating and Air Conditioning continues to offer a similar program with a grant from the Clean Air Fund in the County’s western suburbs.  Residents of those areas can arrange for pickup of an appliance by calling 412-279-6001.

The western suburbs include Bridgeville, Carnegie, Collier, Coraopolis, Crafton, Crescent, Findlay, Green Tree, Heidelberg, Ingram, Kennedy, McDonald, McKees Rocks, Moon, Neville, North Fayette, Oakdale, Pennsbury Village, Robinson, Rosslyn Farms, Scott, South Fayette, Stowe, and Thornburg.
