Winners Tout Environmental Benefits of Alternative Transportation
Three students are winners in a middle school environmental poster contest sponsored by the Allegheny County Health Department in commemoration of Earth Day 2009, April 22.
The theme of this year’s contest was “Alternative Transportation” and aimed to promote modes of transportation that are environmentally friendly and economically efficient, such as hybrid and biofuel-powered vehicles, carpooling, busing, biking and walking.
“We urged students to think green both environmentally and economically by depicting alternative forms of transportation that not only keep our air clean but also save money and natural resources,” said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.
First place was awarded to Victoria Johnston, a 7th grader at St. Gabriel School in Whitehall; second place to Abby Trojanowski, an 8th grader at St. Maurice School in Forest Hills; and third place to Kelly Dasta, a 6th grader at St. Louise de Marillac School in Upper St. Clair.
