Onorato, McAneny Announce Effort to Accommodate
Great Allegheny Passage on Sandcastle Property
(October 3, 2008)
PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Kennywood/Sandcastle President Peter J. McAneny today announced they have made significant progress to accommodate the Great Allegheny Passage on Sandcastle property.“I want to thank Pete McAneny, Kennywood Entertainment and Parques Reunidos for working with me to arrive at a solution that will enable us to complete the Great Allegheny Passage,” said Onorato. “We are working on the conditions of an agreement that will allow the trail to pass through Sandcastle property in a way that will benefit users of both the trail and the water park.”
The effort by Onorato and McAneny will close the final half-mile gap in the Great Allegheny Passage, part of the 335-mile biking and hiking trail stretching from Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.
“We have made significant progress on the critical issues of liability for accidents, safety and the allocation of the property available to accommodate both a trail and the Sandcastle entrance road,” said McAneny.
Many of the details, including the final alignment of the trail, must still be resolved.
Completion of the Great Allegheny Passage is one of the signature projects of Pittsburgh 250, a celebration of the naming of our region by General John Forbes and Colonel George Washington in 1758.
