Minimum Requirements:
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.). Applicants must be Board Eligible in Anatomic Pathology or in combined Anatomic/Clinical Pathology and Board Eligible for Certification in Forensic Pathology with certification within two years of employment. Applicants must have current licensure to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of PA. Applicants with experience of two years or more or prior training in pathology are preferred.
Copies of Certifications and Licenses must be submitted with the application packet.
Applicants must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
Applicants who meet the above requirement and who also have teaching and extensive research experience are preferred.
A valid PA Driver's License is required prior to appointment.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Medical Examiner, the Associate Medical Examiner is the physician responsible for determining cause and manner of death in cases that fall under the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction, performing post mortem examinations and testifying in court proceedings. This position is responsible for overseeing and performing all aspects of autopsy, evaluation of microscopic materials, examination of evidence, photographs and medical records, preparation of written autopsy protocols and preparation for courtroom testimony. Scene visits and investigation may be required. Additionally, this position would be responsible for the development and presentation of lectures and papers. The Medical Examiner's Office is a 24 hours a day, 7 days per week operation. Therefore, Assistant Medical Examiners are required to share the on-call duties to ensure adequate coverage.
Duties:
- Conducts forensic post mortem examinations;
- Examines and interprets microscopic slides, medical records/reports, investigative reports and evidence;
- Prepares autopsy reports and forms;
- Provides expert witness testimony in courtroom proceedings;
- Conducts death scene visits and investigations;
- Consults with law enforcement agencies, decedents' family members and prosecuting and defense attorneys concerning the results of the death investigation;
- Develops and presents educational lectures;
- Participates in the training of forensic pathology fellows; directs the work of forensic pathology fellows;
- Participates in community education;
- Performs other related duties as required or requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of forensic pathology
- Laws, rules and regulations governing forensic activities
Ability to:
- Operate a personal computer including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word applications
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with members of law enforcement agencies as well as prosecuting and defense attorneys
- Conduct research in forensic pathology
Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment
