Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing OR An Associate Degree in Nursing, OR Graduation from a Diploma Nursing Program. Applicants must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania.

Duties:
- Completes health assessments on youth admitted to detention; administers medications and medical treatments, obtains lab specimens.
- Prepares and maintains medical charts.
- Assists physicians in performing physical exams, including taking vitals and obtaining medical history.
- Monitors and accounts for equipment and supplies; ensures the safe and secure management of medications.
- Monitors infection control by preparing information for unit staff on modes of transmission and risk reduction guidelines; assists in resident education regarding health issues.
- Responds to emergencies with emergency first aid; evaluates accidents and injuries to staff and residents and communicates assessment to physicians.
- Prepares resident placement health information to ensure continuity of care.
- Cooperates with other Shuman Center departments, including Social Services and the Mental Health team, in planning for health needs and ensuring treatment for residents.
- Completes health screens in vision and hearing, hemoglobin, sickle cell, STD/HIV, TB and any other health screen ordered by the physician.
- Consults with the Manager of Health Services in developing policy and planning for the overall program.
- Performs other related work.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Established policies and procedures regarding infection control
- Nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern long-term care.
- Adolescent developmental behavior
- Mental illness issues for adolescents
Skills:
- Preparing and administering medications
- Performing treatments
- Health assessments
Ability to:
- Function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, supervisors, physicians, other staff, family and visitors, etc.
- Assess, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for providing quality care.
- Work effectively with high-risk adolescents within a juvenile detention center.
- Perform physical tasks associated with resident care.
