| Minimum Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related degree, and Five (5) years of experience in network engineering, support, and troubleshooting, to include hands-on experience in configuring and troubleshooting network services including IP, routing protocols, router configuration, LAN Switching (layers 2 and 3), VLANs, Access Points, BGP, IGP, ACLs, QoS, and wireless. Storage Area Networking also required. Certification in networking concepts, protocols, network management software, network switching equipment (Cisco and/or Nortel), and direct experience with or certification in HP or Brocade equipment preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. |
Duties:
- Configures and troubleshoots all network hardware.
- Performs network assessments and makes recommendations for upgrades and changes to the network based on current and future requirements.
- Administers SAN for all Fibre Channel network hardware.
- Plans and evaluates existing network systems and makes recommendations for modifications and enhancements to provide appropriate performance, capacity, reliability, and resiliency.
- Provides assistance in ensuring adequate design, capacity, and end-to-end network responsiveness.
- Makes recommendations to management concerning modifying network design and configuration to ensure Information Technology Security compliance, standards compliance, and support of business requirements.
- Ensures compliance with vendor licensing laws and regulations related to software.
- Provides on-call rotation coverage for all networking issues across 31 sites in the Metro Area Network.
- Provides off-hour implementations and upgrades as required.
- Performs other related duties as required or requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Network switching equipment (Cisco/Nortel)
- Network services including IP, routing protocols, router configuration, LAN Switching (layers 2 and 3), VLANs, Access Points, BGP, IGP, ACLs QoS, and wireless
- Storage Area Networking
- HP or Brocade equipment
- SAN hardware
Ability to:
- Communicate well both orally and in writing
- Work independently and as a team member
- Interact well with management, co-workers, and vendors
- Provide on-call rotation coverage
- Extra hours and weekends
Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment.
