Mission

The purpose of the Commission is to reduce violence and promote positive mental health and community well-being in Allegheny County. This will be accomplished through a stakeholder process that will provide for the identification of best practices and existing efforts, and development of local approaches and inclusive community-based actions that will assist the County in building communities that are safe and secure.

Objectives

The objectives of the Commission are:

  1. To identify best practices in violence prevention on a local, state, federal and international level which are applicable to Allegheny County
  2. To identify ways to maximize the impact of existing resources and efforts in Allegheny County aimed at reducing violence in order to gather information and data on what activities are impactful
  3. To identify strategies to reduce the hurdles and stigma associated with seeking mental health services that prevent individuals from getting assistance or treatment
  4. To recommend means to increase community involvement in creating safe and connected neighborhoods
  5. To recommend local approaches that can be utilized by community groups to engage their residents in a common goal of reducing violence and promoting mental health
  6. To recommend policies and actions to the Allegheny County Executive that the County can adopt, implement or offer that will reduce violence and promote positive mental health

Goals

The Commission is tasked with identifying and/or recommending effective means to prevent violence. Those strategies may then be used to reduce the number of injuries and deaths due to violence in Allegheny County, and to increase the number of people who are receiving appropriate mental health care. Through the work of the Commission, there will be an enhanced understanding and awareness of the impact that violence and mental health has on children, families, and communities. Further, through identification and development of local approaches and inclusive community actions, the County can assist in building communities that are safe and secure.
