Off-Site Extraction of Gas Under Deer Lakes Park

 

On May 6th, Allegheny County Council passed Ordinance 8182-14 by a vote of 9 to 4 with one abstention. The ordinance authorizes the County to enter into a lease with Range Resources and Huntley & Huntley for the off-site extraction of gas under Deer Lakes Park. The lease will bring $4.7 million in a bonus payment, an additional $3 million Park Improvement Fund, and provides 18% in royalties to the county over the length of the lease. It was signed into law on May 12th.

The lease was negotiated following the response to the Request for Proposal (RFP) issued by the County last year. The RFP that was issued was Specification No. 7154. You can also review here the current version of the proposed lease.

At the April 23rd Parks Committee meeting, Range Resources made a presentation and answered questions posed by the committee members. Additionally, the company made a number of studies available, and referred Council to quotes from a variety of officials about the industry.
