From world-renowned research facilities to small single-sex colleges, Allegheny County’s higher education institutions are educating some of the brightest minds in the country.
Oakland is home to two of the best-known universities in the world. The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) ranks among the top 10 universities nationally in terms of annual research support by the National Institutes of Health. Pitt also has had more Rhodes Scholars in the past 15 years than any other public or private college or university in Pennsylvania. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is one of 25 Science and Technology Centers sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and it is consistently ranked among the country’s top universities for its undergraduate programs. CMU’s Center for Technology Transfer has helped spawn 50 start-up companies since 1993, many of which remain in the Pittsburgh area.
The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is the largest provider of educational services in western Pennsylvania and the nation’s 16th largest multi-campus community college. CCAC is also a national leader in work force training, and like all of our educational institutions, continues to turn out highly skilled workers and promote economic development.
