Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." This milestone is a perfect opportunity for KEYS AmeriCorps members to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service.
DHS KEYS AmeriCorps members will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2014 by participating in two events.
Carnegie of Homestead Winter Spruce-up
KEYS members will do cleaning and polishing to improve the condition of the interior of the Carnegie LIbrary Music Hall, in Homestead. Weather permitting, they will also clear refuse from the parking lot and surrounding grounds.
The Graduates screening
KEYS members will watch and discuss the film, The Graduates. It is a documentary that “explores pressing issues in education today through the eyes of six young Latino and Latina students from across the United States.”
What KEYS members have accomplished
- assisted with sorting and packaging hands-on science kits to be distributed to schools in the area through ASSET, Inc. (Achieving Student Success through Excellence in Teaching).
- assisted youth with making no-sew, fleece blankets in collaboration with the Pittsburgh chapter of Project Linus. The finished blankets will be donated to hospitals and residential centers including Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), UPMC Mercy NICU, The Children's Institute, The Bradley Center, Auberle, and Mars Home for Youth.
