November 27, 2012 Allegheny County and Operation Safety Net Ready Severe Weather Emergency Shelters
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) Office of Community Services and Pittsburgh Mercy Health System’s Operation Safety Net® will again operate the Severe Weather Emergency Shelter (SWES) this winter for the safety of people who are street homeless.

November 17, 2012 Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Children's Court Celebrate National Adoption Day
Today, Allegheny County celebrated National Adoption Day as 42 children became part of a “forever family.” These children, ranging in age from 16 months to 17 years old, had their adoptions finalized by Children’s Court after a stay in foster care through the DHS Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF). 

October 26, 2012 Fitzgerald Announces Annual Gift Drive to Benefit Children & Youth 
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced the 2012 DHS Holiday Project gift collection drive for children and youth receiving services through the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Children, Youth & Families. The gift drive runs now through December 3. This year, DHS seeks help with direct sponsorship of individual children so the Holiday Project can reach its goal of providing each child in need with at least one meaningful gift.

October 25, 2012 Allegheny County DHS Announces Federal Funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to Help Reduce Hospital Readmissions
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) Area Agency on Aging has received funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to assist in the county’s efforts on reducing hospital readmission for Medicare Fee-for-Service beneficiaries.

October 24, 2012 Fitzgerald Announces Third Year of Federal Funding to Reduce Recidivism
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced that the Jail Collaborative has received a third year of funding in the amount of $1.2 million under the U.S. Department of Justice Second Chance Act Demonstration Programs to support the Allegheny County Reentry Initiative begun in 2010. The Jail Collaborative is a cooperative effort of the County Jail, Department of Human Services, Health Department and Court of Common Pleas. It was formed in 1999 with the purpose of improving public safety, reducing recidivism, and increasing success for inmates following incarceration.   

September 25, 2012 Fitzgerald Announces Recognition of County Fund as “Bright Idea” by Harvard’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance & Innovation
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced that the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund has been recognized as a “Bright Idea” by the Ash Center for Democratic Governance & Innovation at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The designation is part of the American Government Awards Program, which serves to highlight noteworthy programs that may be shared with and adopted by other government officials.

September 18, 2012 Allegheny County Executive, Health Department & Area Agency on Aging Urge All Older Adults to Get Flu Vaccination
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, the Allegheny County Health Department and Area Agency on Aging are working to educate older adults about the dangers of the flu and the importance of receiving an annual influenza vaccination. The effort is part of a new national campaign from the National Council on Aging called “Flu + You,” which is designed to provide information to older adults, their caregivers and family members about influenza prevention and available vaccine options.

September 13, 2012 Scholars in Local Government Program—Deadline Nov. 30
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services is seeking applicants for the Scholars in Local Government Program, a competitive career development initiative designed to attract recent graduates of masters or doctoral level programs to work in public service. Graduates in social work, public policy, public administration, law, business, or related programs graduating within 18 months of the application deadline are eligible to apply. There are no Allegheny County residency requirements; however, outside candidates must be willing to relocate to Pittsburgh by the summer of their scholar’s year.

August 24, 2012 Allegheny County DHS Honored with a 2012 Digital Government Achievement Award
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) has been awarded a 2012 Digital Government Achievement Award for its use of technology to build an integrated service delivery model. The award was presented by the Center for Digital Government, a research and advisory institute that recognizes best practices in local and state government.

The 13th annual Allegheny County Music Festival, featuring Pittsburgh-based Rusted Root, Sunday, August 26, is at the amphitheater in Hartwood Acres Park.

This evening, politicians and political hopefuls offered their best comedy routines to a lively crowd at Candidates’ Comedy Night 2012 (CCN) while raising money for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund. The event was held at the Pittsburgh Improv in Homestead.

In August, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) will hold Candidates’ Comedy Night and the Allegheny County Music Festival, the two annual fundraisers for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund (ACMFF). The Fund provides eligible children and youth with life-enriching items and opportunities not otherwise available through government funding, and is totally dependent upon the generosity of county residents.

June 11, 2012 DHS Summer Food Service Program to Open June 11 
From June 11 through August 17, 2012, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services will operate the SummerFood program, a free breakfast, lunch and recreation program for children up to 18 years old, as well as eligible individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities 19 years of age and older.

June 8, 2012 Homewood Senior Center Extends Hours Sunday and Monday Due to Heat 
The Homewood Healty-Active Living Center will offer extended hours of operation, offering county residents age 60 and older relief from the high temperatures this Sunday and Monday.

June 1, 2012 Area Agency on Aging to Host Public Hearing on Future Plan Budget 
The Advisory Council of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Area Agency on Aging (AAA) will hold a public hearing on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., at the County Courthouse, fourth floor Gold Room. The purpose of the public hearing is to solicit public comment on the 2012-2013 Area Plan and Budget Prospectus and on the AAA Four Year Plan for Fiscal Years 2012-2016.

May 11, 2012 DHS, Mr. Smalls sponsor “We Rock Workshop” concert to benefit Allegheny County Music Festival Fund 
On Thursday May 24, 2012, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) and Creative.Life.Support, the non-profit arm of Mr. Smalls Funhouse, are sponsoring a concert at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale to raise funds for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund. Youth involved with DHS, including current and former foster youth, will show off musical abilities honed through their participation in the “We Rock Workshop.”

April 13, 2012 Public Dress Sale Slated to Benefit Project Prom 
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) will hold a sale of formal dresses on Saturday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Project Prom Shop, located on the third floor of Century III Mall. The public will have the opportunity to purchase formalwear and accessories at a fraction of the retail price and help support Project Prom, as all proceeds will go towards the purchase of tuxedo gift cards and dresses in hard-to-find sizes.

April 9, 2012 DHS KEYS Service Corps – Spring Clean Up in Highland Park 
On Saturday, April 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Allegheny County Department of Human Services KEYS (Knowledge to Empower Youth to Success) Service Corps will gather to complete a beautification project at Highland Park. Approximately 150 DHS KEYS Service Corps members and volunteers will spend the day planting trees, removing invasive species and picking up trash.  

March 27, 2012 LIHEAP Crisis Grant Extended Two Weeks 
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services today announced that the deadline to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Crisis grant has been extended to April 13 for income eligible utility customers who have termination notices with a mailed date of February 1 or later. This is an extension of the original closing date of March 30.   

March 15, 2012 Fitzgerald Announces Additional $3.8 Million Grant to Assist in Reducing Chronic Homelessness 
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) awarded a $3.8 million Continuum of Care grant to the County’s Department of Human Services (DHS) to fund five new projects and 92 units of housing to further combat homelessness.  

February 7, 2012 LIHEAP Crisis Grants Expanded to Include Consumers with Utility Termination Notices Dated February 1, 2012 or Later 
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services today announced that Pennsylvania Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Crisis grants are now available for income eligible utility customers who have termination notices with a mailed date of February 1, 2012 or later. Additionally, households that already received a crisis payment for program year 2011-2012may be eligible to receive a second crisis payment, which must in most cases be applied to a second utility vendor and is subject to the maximum and minimum crisis amounts. In total, the maximum LIHEAP Crisis grant may not exceed $300, and the minimum grant cannot be issued for less than $25. 

February 6, 2012 Project Prom 2012 for Young Ladies and Gentlemen 
Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) Project Prom Shop will make available free prom dresses to eligible high school girls who find the cost of a prom outfit is not within their family’s budget. The gown giveaway will take place at Century III Mall Tuesday, March 6 through Friday, March 9 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

January 3, 2012 LIHEAP Crisis Program Opens Today 
Allegheny County Department of Human Services today announced the Pennsylvania Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Crisis Program Center is open at the downtown location. The Natrona Heights location will open Jan. 9. The tentative closing date for both sites is March 30, 2012. However, the program may be extended or shortened depending upon the availability of federal funds.
