The Allegheny County Department of Human Services today announced that the Pennsylvania Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open its Crisis program centers on January 3, 2011, with a tentative closing date of March 31, 2011. The program may be extended or shortened depending upon the availability of federal funds.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato today issued a call for volunteers to help income-eligible wage earners file their federal, state and local tax returns during the 2011 tax season. The Allegheny County Money In Your Pocket Coalition (MIYP) is a joint effort by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Family Resources, Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Internal Revenue Service, Just Harvest, UCP (United Cerebral Palsy), and United Way of Allegheny County to assist residents in completing and filing their returns.

Because of the extreme heat, some of the senior centers in Allegheny County will remain open longer than their usual hours of operation. All county older adults, age 60 and older, are welcome to attend any of the 60 county-funded senior centers during regular hours, and to stay later at designated centers to avoid the discomfort of the extremely warm weather.

As temperatures soared throughout July, many older adults in Allegheny County learned that not only are the 60 county-funded senior centers great places to take refuge from the heat, but many offer health and wellness activities such as exercise, walking clubs, and field trips to cultural venues and entertainment events. Many of them also provide information and referral assistance services, social activities and a noon-time meal with other older adults.

Care managers will respond to emergency needs as they arise, making sure that the seniors are safe and stable.

In an evaluation released today, the RAND Corporation reports that a street outreach program operated by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services contracted agency One Vision One Life (One Vision), had no significant impact on homicide rates but was associated with significant increases in aggravated assault and gun assault rates in the target neighborhoods. One possible explanation for these findings given by the researchers is the lack of a systematic coordinated strategy between the police, other law enforcement agencies and One Vision.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) awarded a $9.9 million Continuum of Care Grant to the County’s Department of Human Services (DHS) to further combat homelessness. Allegheny County has received this grant from HUD in previous years to provide essential programs, safe havens, transitional housing and permanent support to chronically homeless individuals and families.
