November 23, 2013 Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Children’s Court Celebrate National Adoption Day
Today, Allegheny County celebrated National Adoption Day as 41 children became part of a “forever family.” These children, ranging in age from 14 months to 16 years old, had their adoptions finalized by Children’s Court after a stay in foster care through the DHS Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF).

November 7, 2013 County Launches Annual Gift Drive to Benefit Children and Youth
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced the 2013 Department of Human Services (DHS) Holiday Project gift collection drive for children and youth receiving services through the Department’s Office of Children, Youth and Families. The gift drive runs now through December 6.
October 28, 2013 Allegheny County DHS Director Serves on National Panel on Human Services Leadership
Allegheny County Human Services Director Marc Cherna recently presented at the 2013 Human Services Summit at Harvard University. This year’s theme was “Leadership in an Era of Disruption” and Director Cherna served on a panel with Gary Glickman, Senior Policy Advisor, U.S. Department of the Treasury, and Kimberlee Cornett, Director of Social Investment Practice at the Kresge Foundation.
October 23, 2013 Allegheny County Receives $1.8 Million to Recruit & Engage Families for Children in Foster Care
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced that the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) has been awarded $1,844,121 from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to help in the recruitment and engagement of foster families, including kinship fostering, for children in the child welfare system.

September 17, 2013 National, State, County Dignitaries to Gather in Lawrenceville to Launch Hundreds into Regional AmeriCorps Service
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced today that Allegheny County will be hosting the Western Pennsylvania Regional AmeriCorps Launch on Friday, September 27, 2013 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Teamsters Temple, 4701 Butler Street, in Lawrenceville. Western Pennsylvania AmeriCorps members will be sworn in at the launch before fanning out to serve in northern counties from Greene to Erie and as far east as Franklin.
September 13, 2013 Town Hall Forum Will Offer Answers About Affordable Care Act
A Town Hall Forum on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, featuring a panel discussion by experts and a question-and-answer session, at the University of Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Oct. 2, will offer the public one of its best opportunities locally to get answers to questions about the legislation. “The Impact of the Affordable Health Care Act” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in Ballroom B at Pitt’s University Club, 123 University Place, Oakland.
September 12, 2013 DHS Honored with Second Consecutive Digital Government Achievement Award
For the second year in a row, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services has been honored with a Digital Government Achievement Award from the Center for Digital Government, a research and advisory institute that recognizes best practices in local and state government. This year, the Center recognized the Allegheny County Jail Collaborative’s Information Technology Application, launched in April 2012 to improve the tracking and data collection necessary to determine the effectiveness of community reentry programs for incarcerated men and women.
August 20, 2013 Allegheny County Music Festival to Benefit Children and Youth
The 14th annual Allegheny County Music Festival, featuring Rusted Root and several local bands, happens Sunday, Sept. 1, at the amphitheater in Hartwood Acres Park. Opening acts begin at 5 p.m. and Rusted Root will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. The suggested donation is $20 per car to benefit the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund (ACMFF). The Fund finances requests from children and youth receiving services through DHS or Allegheny County Juvenile Probation for life-enriching items and opportunities not otherwise available through traditional government funding.
August 15, 2013 Candidates Reveal Hidden Talents and Humor for a Good Cause
This evening, local and state candidates along with special guests earned big laughs from a standing-room-only crowd at Candidates’ Comedy Night 2013 (CCN) while raising money for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund. The event was held at the Pittsburgh Improv in Homestead.
June 10, 2013 DHS SummerFood opens today providing nutritious meals for children during the summer
Today through August 16, 2013, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services will operate the SummerFood program, a free breakfast, lunch and recreation program for children up to 18 years old, as well as eligible individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities 19 years of age and older.
June 7, 2013 Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging Public Hearing June 14
The Advisory Council of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Area Agency on Aging (AAA) will hold a public hearing on Friday, June 14, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at One Smithfield Street, Lower Level, Liberty Conference Room. The purpose of the public hearing is to solicit public comment on the 2013-2014 Area Plan and Budget Prospectus.
June 4, 2013 Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Helps Older Residents Purchase Fresh Produce
Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging (AAA) will, once again, administer the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. This program assists eligible older adults in purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables by providing a set of four checks for a total of $20. The checks can be spent throughout the summer on produce at participating farmers’ markets.
May 30, 2013 DHS Area Agency on Aging Moves to the South Side
The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) staff members from 441 Smithfield Street as well as McKeesport and Carnegie regional offices will be moving to the South Side. The new address is Birmingham Towers, 2100 Wharton Street, second floor. The move is scheduled for the end of May, with AAA staff expecting to report to the new office for the first time on June 3.
May 9, 2013 Fitzgerald Announces Formation of 23-Member Public Health Commission on Preventing Violence and Promoting Community Mental Health
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced today that he has formed a Public Health Commission on Preventing Violence and Promoting Community Mental Health, upon the request of State Representative Ed Gainey. The 23-member Commission has a mission of reducing violence and promoting positive mental health and community well-being in Allegheny County.

April 12, 2013 One Final Day for Project Prom Giveaway
Allegheny County Department of Human Services today announced that the Project Prom Shop will offer eligible high school girls one last chance to choose a free gown and accessories. Located at the Century III Mall, the Project Prom Shop will be open Tuesday, April 23 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This one-day extension, from the original close date of March16, is due to popular demand.

Allegheny County Department of Human Services was named by IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program as a 2013 Laureate in the category of human services. The annual award program honors individuals and organizations whose visionary applications of information technology promote positive social, economic and educational change.
March 15, 2013 Fitzgerald Announces $13.1 Million HUD Grant to Combat Homelessness
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a $13.1 million Continuum of Care grant to the County’s Department of Human Services to assist in its efforts to reduce homelessness. The grant is awarded through a competitive process and includes the renewal of HUD funds to support a continuum of housing and service programs for the homeless of Allegheny County. Specific programs include supportive services, safe havens, transitional housing, and permanent housing for persons with disabilities.
March 8, 2013 DHS KEYS Service Corps Celebrates National AmeriCorps Week, March 9 – 17
Allegheny County Department of Human Services KEYS (Knowledge to Empower Youth to Success) Service Corp will celebrate National AmeriCorps Week by coordinating the following service projects:
- Friday, March 15, Community Beautification Project – assisting Allegheny K-5 magnet school students and faculty in creating fence art, painting sidewalk art games, picking up litter, and preparing gardens for student planting projects.
- Friday, March 15, Braddock Carnegie Library Cleanup – cleaning the woodwork, blinds, windows and provide a general cleaning of this National Historic Landmark.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services today acknowledged the release of a recent report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) highlighting the Department of Human Services (DHS) Data Warehouse as an example of an integrated system designed to promote data sharing.
February 15, 2013 DHS Project Prom Shop Opens March 11
Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) Project Prom Shop will make available free prom dresses to eligible high school girls whose families may find the cost of buying formal attire prohibitive. Located at the Century III Mall, the Project Prom Shop will be open Monday, March 11 through Thursday, March 14 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Project Prom, an initiative of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS), is now accepting public donations of formal attire for girls and boys at downtown and Bethel Park locations. The Project Prom Shop at Century III Mall will begin accepting donations March 5.
