Mayview Closure Information
Testimony by Pat Valentine to the Senate Democratic Policy Committee Hearing on April 3, 2008 regarding the closing of Mayview State Hospital.
On August 15, 2007, Department of Public Welfare Secretary Estelle B. Richman announced plans to close the clinical services of the civil section of Mayview State Hospital by December 31, 2008.
The State’s decision to close Mayview provided an incentive to continue to expand our community-based service offerings for Allegheny County citizens with serious and persistent mental illness. Over the past two years, Allegheny County and DHS worked with the state and stakeholders from Allegheny County and the four other counties in the Mayview Service Area to develop a course of action to insure a comprehensive, holistic assessment and planning process that results in community support plans that promote ongoing recovery and reflect the personal choices of persons receiving services. This planning process was very effective over the past two years in supporting many former residents of Mayview State Hospital to transition successfully to community life.
As of December 29, 2008, all former Mayview residents have been discharged and most have transitioned into integrated community settings that were determined based on individual preferences as well as the ability of the setting to provide individuals with the services and supports necessary to help them achieve their own recovery goals. A small number of residents will continue to reside in a Long Term Structured Residence (LTSR) on the grounds of the Mayview temporarily until an appropriate community facility can be located.
We are confident that the services and supports being provided to the individuals who were moved from Mayview will continue to assist them in their recovery and in resuming their lives in the community.
