AAA to offer ‘Better Choices, Better Health’ for seniors
In April 2010, the DHS Area Agency on Aging (AAA) launched the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, also known as “Better Choices, Better Health,” for older adults age 60 years and older with chronic conditions. The program is currently funded to operate through March 2012.

DHS hosts public meetings to gain input for children’s services
DHS and Juvenile Court hosted four public meetings in May and June to hear recommendations from county residents about how best to coordinate services for children and youth in Allegheny County.

Candidates’ Comedy Night returns August 19 at Improv
On August 19, 2010, DHS will host Candidates’ Comedy Night 2010 at the Pittsburgh Improv, 166 E. Bridge Street, Homestead, PA 15120. Now, in its third year, this hilarious, adult-oriented fundraiser benefits the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund.

DHS SummerFood program opened on June 14
On June 14, 2010, DHS opened SummerFood, its free breakfast, lunch and recreation program for children and youth 18 years of age and younger in economically disadvantaged communities.

‘Imagine’ is theme for 23rd Annual FOI Art Exhibit
This year marks the 23rd Annual Flowering of Insight Art Exhibit (FOI) for artists receiving, or who have received, services through DHS. The exhibit features nearly 100 artists and more than 130 works of art, including paintings, drawings and mixed media representing each artist’s interpretation of “Imagine.”

DHS co-sponsors service fair for homeless vets
On August 21, 2010, DHS will co-sponsor Stand Down 2010, an intensive service fair for homeless veterans and their families, offering them a day-long respite from the streets and a real opportunity to put their lives back together.
