Since men and women began returning to the U.S after their military service in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, news reports have highlighted the challenges they faced as they worked to reintegrate into their families and communities. The Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Behavioral Health and Allegheny County Veterans’ Services teamed up in 2007, 2008, and 2009 to host Support for Returning Veterans – A Community Effort. The conferences gathered providers of diverse medical and human services to assist returning military personnel make a successful reintegration into their communities and civilian life.
Homeless veterans were also invited to take advantage of services offered at the 2008 and 2009 STAND DOWN. The events brought providers of critical services to one place so participating veterans could get the help they need more easily.
