Family Fall Festival
Originating in 2007, the DHS Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF) Family Fall Festival was an annual event that brought all members of CYF foster families out for a day of fun, food and education. The Festival took place in the parking lot of the CYF Lexington Regional Office in Point Breeze. CYF foster parents and all their children were invited to enjoy a morning snack, a hot lunch and festival foods like popcorn, snow cones and cotton candy. Activities focused on Olympic style competitions in art, academic and athletic abilities. Young winners took home prizes and a feeling of accomplishment. Vendors of services for children and families were invited to display their wares and offer information to interested parents. Parents earned foster parent training hours based on this. Vendors also typically brought giveaways and engaging activities for participants. Entertainment and door prizes, donated by foster parents, retail establishments or purchased by CYF, rounded out the day’s festivities. Despite all this frivolity, at the end of the day, bonding between parents and children within foster families and across foster families was the most valuable outcome of this unique event. The last Family Fall Festival was in 2012.
