DHS hosts various annual events to celebrate achievements, provide support to those who receive services through DHS and increase awareness about the needs of persons served by the department. Many of the events are open to the public. Others require pre-registration. Some are by invitation only.Education

Allegheny County Music Festival
Allegheny County Music Festival Date: August 31, 2014

The Allegheny County Music Festival is an annual benefit concert for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund, which provides life-enriching items and opportunities for children served through DHS and Juvenile Probation.


 

Holiday Project
Holiday Project GiftsDate: November/December
Location: Allegheny County

The Holiday Project provides gifts during the holiday season to children receiving services through the Office of Children, Youth and Families. These gifts are donated by companies, groups and individuals living in Allegheny County.

 

 

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of ServiceDate: January 20, 2014

DHS KEYS AmeriCorps members will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2014 by participating in two service projects in Allegheny County.

 

 

Project Prom / Project Prom for Gentlemen
Project Prom Dates: Donations: Accepted year round; Project Prom Gown Giveaway: Completed; Public Sale: Completed; Project Prom 5K: Completed; Project Prom for Gentlemen, Completed

Locations: Donations: Human Services Building; Project Prom Shop: Century III Mall; Project Prom for Gentlemen: UPMC Shadyside (registration required)

Project Prom provides formal attire to high schools students
receiving services or eligible to receive services from the DHS
through donations from retail establishments and the general public.

 

Older Americans Month Older Americans Month
Dates: Various in May
Locations: Various in Allegheny County

Older Americans Month celebrates and commemorates the lasting contributions made by residents over the age of 60. Many of the events are hosted by Senior Community Centers supported by the Allegheny County DHS Area Agency on Aging.

Candidates' Comedy Night
Candidates Comedy NightDate: Wednesday, August 13, 2014

Candidates Comedy Night is a fundraiser for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund. Established in 2008, the festivities feature candidates for state and local political offices and other local political leaders taking the stage at a local comedy club.

Day of Self-Discovery
Date: TBA

Begun in 2000, the Day of Self-Discovery Conference is an annual event that brings together individuals in Allegheny County who are personally involved in the process of recovery. Persons who live with mental health concerns or substance use disorders, along with their family members and other supportive stakeholders gather to share about their recovery experiences in varied and creative ways. Pre-registration is requested but not required.


Invitation Only

Local Government Case Competition
Graduate students from local universities compete in interscholastic/interdisciplinary teams to solve challenging public sector problems and increase their knowledge of local government employment opportunities.
