Supported Employment Services for Persons with Serious Mental Illness

Supported employment services help individuals, 18 years of age and older, with serious mental illness find a job. After a person finds a job, the supported employment program staff continues to provide support to the person for as long as the person wants it.

Older Adults Training and Employment

The Senior Training and Employment Program (STEP) provides work experience and training opportunities to Allegheny County residents age 55 and older who meet income guidelines.  Individuals enrolled in the program receive twenty hours of training/work experience in nonprofit or government agencies and are paid minimum wage. In addition to work experience and training, enrollees receive assistance in securing full-time and part-time employment in the private sector.  Pre-application must be made for enrollment of services.

Recipients of TANF or SNAP (food stamps) Training and Employment

The EARN program is designed to help persons who are recipients of either TANF and/or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/food stamps) get a job or get a better job so they can earn more than they receive from public assistance. People who are interested in participating in EARN must get a referral from their County Assistance Office (CAO) caseworker.

EARN offers assistance all along the path to better employment – from improving basic academic skills to assisting with child care and transportation, through offering supports during the first six months of your employment.

Youth Training and Employment

Youth employment and training services are offered through a variety of providers for in-school youth and out-of-school youth.  Providers of services for youth who are still in-school work through programs in area school districts and afterschool programs. The focus is education and career preparation for teenagers 14 to 18 years of age.  Providers of services for youth who have left high school prior to graduation give a hands-on educational experience through vocational training. Classes such as machining or computer repair are taught with the focus of gaining valuable skills that lead to training-related employment. There is also a program for pregnant and parenting youth who left high school before graduating and are receiving TANF.
