DHS News December 2012

A Discussion on the Evolution of DHS
Recently, we sat down with DHS Director Marc Cherna, Executive Deputy Director for Integrated Program Services Pat Valentine and Integrated Programs Initiatives Manager Walter Smith to discuss their vision for the future of DHS. The following interview, while lengthy, discusses many important developments within DHS and attempts to provide some insight into what these developments mean for the continuing evolution of the Department.

Disaster/Emergency Preparedness
In calmer times, it can be difficult to imagine that Allegheny County could ever face a disaster or an emergency; however, unexpected things do happen. Advanced planning is a person’s best defense in emergency situations. As the New Year draws closer, make a 2013 resolution to be prepared for emergencies: be informed, create a plan and make a kit.

Holiday Project Spreads Joy
The hard work of DHS staff and generous donations from local businesses and individuals led to another successful year for the DHS Holiday Project. This year, 4,000 children and youth served by the Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF) received gifts, and 2,300 of those children were directly sponsored by individuals and corporations.

KUDOS: Allison Kroll
On December 16, Allison Kroll, caseworker for the Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF), received her MSW degree through the Child Welfare Education for Leadership (CWEL) program. In addition to receiving her degree, Allison graduated with the highest of academic honors and was selected to speak at the graduation ceremony in recognition of her outstanding scholastic achievement.

KUDOS: Screening Success
DHS was recognized by Screening for Mental Health as a top 10 online screening site for National Depression Screening Day (NDSD) 2012.
