SOCI is gone, but its legacy lives on
Between 1998 and 2011, the DHS Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) received grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to implement projects—Community Connections for Families (CCF), Partnerships for Youth Transition (PYT), and Starting Early Together (SET)—collectively known as the System of Care Initiative (SOCI). Working with nine targeted neighborhoods during the nearly 14-year period, SOCI served more than 1,000 families and youth from birth to 24 years old, using “wraparound” as the primary practice model for service delivery.

Holy Family youth fly 900 miles to see Steelers play in Kansas City
On Nov. 27, six youth in Holy Family Institute’s residential program boarded a Corporate Air private jet and flew nearly 900 miles to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, Mo. on Sunday Night Football.

Free Tax preparation set to start Jan. 17 for qualifying households
Since 2009, the Allegheny County Money In Your Pocket (MIYP) Coalition has prepared 14,756 tax returns for low-to-moderate income households and generated $23.7 million in tax refunds, including $9.2 million in earned income tax credits.

DHS Holiday Project and Pittsburgh Steelers benefit Dads Assisting Dads (DADS) Program
On Dec. 12, the DHS Holiday Project, a program run out of the DHS Office of Community Relations, partnered with the Pittsburgh Steelers to host an autograph-signing session benefiting the Dads Assisting Dads (DADS) program in the DHS Office of Children, Youth and Families.

LIHEAP Crisis Program centers to open Jan. 3
The DHS Office of Community Services will open its Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Crisis Program Centers on Jan. 3, 2012, with a tentative closing date of March 30, 2012. The program may be extended or shortened depending upon the availability of federal funds.
