Adoption, Family Strengthening and Foster Care Awareness

National Adoption Month in Allegheny County
Adoption Month is celebrated in November with a variety of events to raise awareness about the need for strong, loving adoptive homes. One high point of each year is National Adoption Day. On this day, children and their adoptive families are honored by Allegheny County with festivities and mementoes of the day.

Family Strengthening

Families United
Between 2000 and 2012, Families United celebrated the strengths of all families, especially those who were reunited. The day's free and public festivities included food, games, activities and entertainment.

Foster Care

The reality of foster care affects children and young adults who are living in an out-of-home placement, parents whose children are removed from their care, and the foster families who provide a temporary yet loving home. Awareness and recognition events in the foster care category reflect each of these groups.

CASA Forgotten Child Rally
DHS cooperated with CASA to raise awareness about the needs of foster children and encouraged the public to become foster families.

My Life: Stories from Youth in Allegheny County’s Child Welfare System
Young adults who live in foster care face many challenges, particularly as they transition from out-of-home placement to independence. Given the opportunity, youth in the child welfare system offer great insights about how their lives were shaped by the services they received and by the absence of needed services. DHS tapped into this valuable resource and created My Life.

Foster Parent Recognition Dinner
From 1997 through 2011, DHS honored the work done by foster parents through the annual Foster Parent Recognition Dinner.  Parents enjoyed a catered meal, door prizes and entertainment.

Family Fall Festival
The Family Fall Festival is dedicated to breaking the stigma associated with being a foster child by providing a fun-filled afternoon where foster families can interact with each other in a stress-free setting.
