DHS chose to begin using Facebook and Twitter to make it easier for the public, providers, staff, media and stakeholders to get the latest information in a fast, easy way. Allegheny County residents of all ages have rapidly adopted these technologies, and many prefer these as their primary method of communication.
Facebook and Twitter allow anyone with an account, which is free, to follow DHS. Once you are linked to the DHS account, the updates will automatically appear on your account page, making getting news quick and easy – simply go to your account and see what’s new.
Facebook is a very popular social networking tool used by over 200 million active users, 100 million of which log on daily. Currently the largest growing number of users are 35 and older.
To create an account, simply go to www.facebook.com (from your home computer) and complete the “Sign up” fields on the right hand side of the page.
To find DHS, type “Allegheny County Department of Human Services” in the search field on the top right of your home page. When the results are displayed, click the “Pages” tab. Next, click on the Allegheny County Department of Human Services link, and once on the DHS Facebook homepage, click “Become a Fan” under our logo. Congratulations, you are now a friend of DHS and will receive updates about the Department automatically.
Twitter is a micro-blogging site that allows users to make short updates—140 characters or less—about anything. Approximately 6 million users login monthly, and the most followed person sends updates to nearly 2 million users. To follow DHS on twitter simply go to www.twitter.com/acdhs and login or create an account (click on the “Get Started-Join!” button and complete the fields with your information).
Both Facebook and Twitter offer easy access via mobile devices. Users can choose to receive updates on their cell phones and can send updates instantly. More than 30 million active Facebook users access their site through a mobile device. This ability offers many opportunities to get information to a group of interested users very quickly.
DHS has plans to expand the use of social media technology to include specified areas of interest. Announcements will be made on our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as the DHS web site at www.alleghenycounty.us/dhs.
