DHS co-sponsors service fair for homeless vets
On August 15, 2009, DHS will co-sponsor Stand Down 2009, an intensive service fair for homeless veterans and their families, offering them a day-long respite from the streets and a real opportunity to put their lives back together.
The phrase “stand down” is military terminology referring to fresh troops providing a reprieve for exhausted combat troops. In stand down, the exhausted troops are removed from the battlefield and placed in a safe, secure environment. When in stand down, the soldiers are also given medical attention, food, fresh clothing and the chance to clean up, rest and recuperate.
The services that will be made available at Stand Down 2009, which will be held at Shepherds Heart Church, 13 Pride Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., include:
- housing assistance
- job search support
- social services
- introduction to veteran benefits
- legal help
- medical care
- eye exams and glasses
- dental care
- hair cuts
- foot care
The DHS Office of Community Relations (OCR) spearheaded a toiletry drive to collect essential items to be given to the veterans at Stand Down 2009. Some examples of toiletries include toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, undergarments, deodorant, hairbrushes/combs, soap and body washes.
