e-vice: CCN 2009 Online Campaign Efforts
DHS is taking a new approach to promoting its second annual Candidates’ Comedy Night (CCN) by utilizing social media and an enhanced web presence.
Candidates’ Comedy Night 2009, to be held at the Pittsburgh Improv on August 20, is one of two events that contribute money to the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund (ACMFF). For more about this event and the ACMFF, see “Judicial, mayoral candidates compete for laughs at second annual Comedy Night” on page 4.
Social media is a fast-growing and efficient way for DHS to reach consumers. Using sites like Twitter is not only free, but it allows the Department to reach a broad audience of consumers, stakeholders and the general public as events happens or at pre-scheduled specified times.
By crafting and sending Twitter messages – or tweets – that are 140 characters or less and include keywords in them such as “comedy” or “Improv” that are likely to be searched by Twitter users, the DHS Twitter account has been employed to assist in the larger awareness and outreach efforts for CCN 2009. To View the DHS’ Twitter account, please visit www.twitter.com/acdhs from your personal computer.
Since May, DHS has been active on the popular social media site Facebook. A photo album of last year’s CCN can be found on the DHS Facebook home page.
Unlike Twitter, on Facebook users can create event pages all the pertinent information about the event, including date, place and time, and invite friends to visit. DHS has an event page for CCN 2009 with photos from last year’s event and links to the video City Paper recorded of last year’s event. The CCN Facebook event page also provides a link to the DHS website page for CCN. Since this event is in the “public listing” on Facebook, it is searchable by everyone who visits.
The DHS Facebook page can be found at: www.alleghenycounty.us/dhs/facebook.aspx. Visitors will be redirected to Facebook and will need to log in or create a free account to access the page.
On our own site
Having a strong, visible web presence on the Department’s own web site (www.alleghenycounty.us/dhs/ccn.aspx) is another key part of the promoting CCN 2009. In addition to the web page with a list of the candidates and ticket information, a promotion page has been created that includes sample e-mails, sample press releases, logos, flyers and web graphics. Individuals, groups or organizations interested in promoting and fundraising for the event are encouraged to use the resources provided on this page.
Social media and an enhanced promotion material web page are two new ways that DHS is getting the word out about CCN 2009 and the greater purpose of raising money for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund.
