Senior Celebration in the Park to focus on healthy lifestyle for seniors
On May 21, DHS Office of Community Relations and Area Agency on Aging, in collaboration with many other Allegheny County departments, will host “Senior Celebration in the Park” from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in South Park (on top of the hill from the Fairgrounds).
The celebration is part of Older Americans Month, which was first proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
The theme for Older Americans Month 2009 is “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow.” In keeping with this theme, Celebration in the Park will feature presentations and activities that emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Events will include health screenings, a healthy cooking demonstration with WQED’s Chris Fennimore, and a healthy snacks demonstration by Atria Senior Living.
There will also be numerous activities, including nature walks, dancing, games, prizes and giveaways. Live entertainment will be provided by The Rick Purcell Band featuring Shari Richards, Blue Box Seven, OASIS Chorus, Umoja African Arts Company, Tuesday Musical Group, and Roland Ford Line Dancing. Men’s softball teams from the South Hills and North Hills will play at 10:30 a.m.
“We value older adults as one of our greatest assets here in Allegheny County,” said Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato. “We are grateful for the vitality that seniors bring to our community. The Senior Celebration is the perfect opportunity to thank older adults for their contributions.”
Morning refreshments and lunch will be available at no cost to attendees. Seniors are encouraged to wear adequate sun protection. ACCESS Transportation will provide free rides from area senior centers to the event, and free shuttles will be available to transport seniors to all of the various exhibits and activities.
“We are very excited about this opportunity, not only to present information about the programs and services available in Allegheny County, but also to offer this information in a fun and entertaining setting,” said DHS Director Marc Cherna. “Our best wishes are for an enjoyable and rewarding day for everyone who attends.”
Advanced registration is required through any Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging Senior Center or by calling the DHS Event Line at 412-350-3428. The registration deadline is May 14.
Senior Celebration in the Park is made possible through the generosity of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging, and the County’s departments of parks, public works and special events.
