Walter Szymanski began his career in Allegheny County when he joined the Controller’s Office as an Auditor in 2002. In 2006 he joined the District Attorney’s Office as the Finance Manager for Stephen A. Zappala.  He came to the Office of County Council on March 5, 2012 and was appointed to the position of Budget Director by County Council.

As Council's Budget Director, Walter is responsible for assisting Council in the development of the annual Operating, Capital, Grants, and Special Accounts Budgets. The Budget Director also maintains surveillance over the adopted appropriations and monitors all fiscal activities for compliance with established budgetary guidelines and all applicable local, state, and federal laws. Additionally, the Budget Director functions as a liaison to the County Manager’s Office, the Department of Budget and Finance, the Department of Economic Development, and other entities as needed.

The Budget Director, on behalf of the Executive Committee of Council, also serves as the Manager of Operations for the Office of County Council and serves as County Council’s representative on the Allegheny County Retirement Board.
Walter is a 1997 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Management from LaRoche College in 2002.

Walter, a lifelong resident of Allegheny County, resides in the City of Pittsburgh with his wife Heather.
