The health care industry has been among the cornerstones of our regional economy for many years. Allegheny County is recognized internationally as a leading health care community, where the best physicians and institutions continually break new ground in care and medical research.
There are more than 90 medical facilities in our area including hospitals, medical schools, rehabilitation centers, hospices and nursing homes. Among these are some of the best medical facilities in the world.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was recently placed on the U.S. News and World Report Honor Roll as one of the "best of the best" hospitals in the United States, ranking 12th out of 188 best hospitals. UPMC has also long been recognized as a premier transplant facility, where more types of organ transplants are performed than any facility in the world.
Allegheny University Hospital, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, The Western Pennsylvania Health System, and Magee-Women's Hospital are also among the magnificent medical facilities which have received national and international accolades in their many specialty areas of service and research.
Allegheny County's own Kane Regional Centers provide the best in nursing and assisted care to more than 1400 residents in four locations; Ross Township; Scott Township; the City of McKeesport and the Glen Hazel section of Pittsburgh. The Kane Centers have been recognized by the Pennsylvania Association of County Affiliated Homes as Nursing Home of the Year.
